Donna van Milligen Bielke (1983) is an architect with an outspoken vision and an award-winning architectural signature. In 2014, Van Milligen Bielke was the first female architect to receive the Prix de Rome for architecture for a plan for organizing the public space in Rotterdam. Winning this important culture prize gave rise to the start of our own design practice.

Van Milligen Bielke is fascinated by the redefinition and positioning of boundaries, and the influence of architecture on public space. Rather than classifying architecture in volumes, and the city as a collection of volumes, she sees architecture as a means of shaping, connecting and responding to urban fabric. She thus operates on the border of architecture and urban design and moves between different scale levels, from the architectural interior to the urban fabric.

In 2019 she received the Young Maasskant Prize from the Rotterdam Mayor Aboutaleb for this consistent focus on the profession.  Studio Donna van Milligen Bielke has been working together with Ard de Vries Architects since 2017. They work on a diverse range of projects together from residential towers, villas and larger cultural buildings such as the Kunstwerf, a collective building for 4 different cultural institutions in Groningen, to design research for publications and exhibitions.
